The LMC is being made aware of increasingly frequent concerns raised by practices because of the unscrupulous behaviour of various online prescribers/pharmacies inappropriately prescribing quantities of controlled drugs for their patients, without due checks or communications with patients’ practices
Whilst there are a number of routes by which practices might raise concerns about this (including the GMC, CQC, NHS England, CCG, MHRA, general pharmaceutical council and the police), the LMC has been informed that the best way for co-ordinated action to be taken on this issue is for all concerns to be sent to the NHS England Controlled Drugs Accountable officer via AGCSU.ControlledDrugs@nhs.net
Furthermore the national controlled drugs accountable officer, Dr Chris Wiener has advised that he is happy for practices to share concerns with him directly, particularly where these concerns have an evidence trail that permits him a potential route into the issue, in which case he is encouraging those practices that have specific concerns relating to patient safety to obtain consent from patients and to share details of their concerns with him.
If any practice feels that it is appropriate to take such action and has obtained patient consent then please contact the LMC in order to be put into direct contact with Dr Wiener. AS ALWAYS DO NOT SHARE ANY PATIENT IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION WITH THE LMC."
